The Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation Board of Trustees welcomed Hugh Turner of Egg Harbor Township as a new member on Sept. 19.
Since 2006, Turner has held the position of vice president of finance at Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa. Previous to his work at Borgata, he worked in both operational and corporate roles within the gaming industry and has lived in Tennessee, Missouri and Louisiana. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration/accounting from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.
Atlantic Cape established the Foundation in 1978 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity to build broad base of financial support for its programs and services. Foundation members are drawn from local industry and small businesses and represent a broad cross-section of active leaders in the community. The Foundation has raised more than $5 million for scholarships, Foundation operations and to enhance academic programs and the campus environment. Annually, the Foundation provides nearly $500,000 for institutional scholarships, grants and emergency help.
Registration for winter and spring sessions at Atlantic Cape Community College will be offered earlier to help students plan and take advantage of the delayed payment.
Registration begins at Atlantic Cape:
- Oct. 29 for students with at least 32 credits at time of registration
- Oct. 30 for students with at least 17 credits at time of registration
- Oct. 31 for all returning students
- Nov. 1 for all students
Registration hours are weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The JCPenney Suit Up event held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Hamilton Mall gave students the opportunity to shop for professional dress at discounted prices not available to the public as they prepare for career fairs, internships, graduation and future job interviews.
The event was open to current students and alumni. Atlantic Cape collaborated with Stockton University Career Services Department to participate in the event.

9/11 Memorial Tribute at CMCC
Dr. Tammy DeFranco, director of the Cape May County Campus, presented a 9/11 memorial tribute. A big thank you to Professor Helen McCaffrey who provided an educational and heartwarming speech and her class who participated in remembering the children whose lives were lost on this day. Also, thank you to Professors Mast and Palmer for involving their students. Thank you, Student Government Association for your support.
Welcome back to the Cape May County Campus
Students were happy to receive the snacks and the tools (notebooks and pens — thanks to the SGA and the NJEA Union) for a great beginning to their semester.
Dr. Tammy DeFranco presented a career workshop to the Work First students in Rio Grande on Thursday, Sept. 20. Students received information on our college and the choices of degrees or continuing education paths.
Atlantic Cape Community College has been selected as one of 13 community colleges to participate in Governor Phil Murphy’s “Community College Innovation Challenge (CCOG),” a pilot program that will launch in the spring semester, January 2019. The program supports making higher education more attainable for New Jersey residents by providing additional funding above federal, state or institutional financial aid money to effectively make college “free” for qualifying students.
Students who make an adjusted gross income of $45,000 or less, are taking six or more credits and have applied for federal and state grant aid may be eligible to have the remainder of their tuition and educational fees balance paid for through this program. Current students who have already completed a financial aid application for the fall 2018 semester will be automatically considered for eligibility if they enroll for at least six credits in the spring 2019 semester. Students who have not yet filed for financial aid for academic year 2018-19 will have until Feb. 15, 2019 to apply for CCOG awards. Time is running out to participate in the 2018 Atlantic Cape Community College Scramble “Fore” Scholarships golf tournament, Friday, Oct. 12, at the Cape May National Golf Club.
Registration begins at 10 a.m., followed by a scramble format, with a shotgun-start at 11:30 a.m.
Player fees, which include a complimentary gift, lunch and awards dinner, are $150 per person or $500 per foursome. Golfers can participate in a variety of skills challenges, including closest-to-the-pin and longest drive contests. Individuals and businesses can also support the event through sponsorship opportunities ranging from $150 to $5,000. Welcome Students Day at the Worthington Atlantic City Campus
The Charles D. Worthington Campus welcomed students on Wednesday, Sept.19, with a Pizza Party and school supply giveaways. The students enjoyed delicious cheese or veggie pizza cooked fresh by Chef Hector Sandebal of Hannah G’s. Additionally, students were treated to desserts including brownies or assorted cookies along with a variety of many other healthy snacks. Students received a notebook, folder, pen and highlighter to help with their school supplies so they can be better prepared for academic success. Many students graciously said thank you for free food and the school supplies.
A gigantic “thank you” to Dean Donna Vassallo, career education and workforce development; students Quran Dabney and Songan Bazemore for volunteering and greeting the students with a smile and kindness; the Student Government Association for sponsoring the activity; Vita Stovall, specialist, student services, and adjunct professor of social sciences for coordinating Welcome Students Day.
