Dr. Gaba Hosts College-Wide Meeting Sept. 28

Dr. Barbara Gaba, college president, hosted a college-wide meeting with the college community on Thursday, Sept. 28, in the Walter Edge Theater of the Mays Landing Campus. The meeting was simulcasted to the Cape May County Campus in Room 113 and the Worthington Atlantic City Campus in Room 160.

The meeting highlighted an update on college priorities and student success initiatives, and concluded with a Q&A.

Help!  I Lost My Passport!

Whether it’s before your trip or while you’re on your trip, realizing you lost your passport can be a panic-inducing moment.  Even worse, what if you get robbed on your trip?  What do you do?  Well, it depends, but here are three scenarios, and what you can do in case it happens!

 The U.S. Department of State is the Federal agency that issues your passport. Individual states do not issue passports. While a passport agency may be located in a state, it’s not a state agency.  It’s a Federal agency. (And remember, passports and visas are different.  You can read about the difference between passports and visas in my post Passports vs. Visas – the Difference) Normally, it takes about four to six weeks to get a passport.  Expedited service is considered two weeks. Expedited service at the agency will take about eight days. Recently, the U.S. Department of State held passport acceptance fairs at various locations throughout the U.S. While that date has passed, you may want to keep an eye out for future dates if you’re applying for a passport for the first time. Atlantic Cape Community College’s Board of Trustees met Sept. 26 to approve personnel matters, contracts and purchases at the Mays Landing Campus.

–Revisions of Chapter 12 resolutions to conform to Atlantic County bond wording for FY’08, 10, and 12-17.

–Cell phone boosters, Powerful Signal, Hurricane, Utah, $21,150.

–Simcare Support Plan, Adacel Systems, Inc., Orlando, Florida, $42,350.45.

–State Contract, Brightlinks and Polycom, Troxell, Lumberton, New Jersey, $62,827.35.

Atlantic Cape Announces Change in Leadership Roles for Atlantic City and Cape May County Campuses

A reassignment of leadership roles at both Atlantic Cape Community College’s Cape May County and Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City campuses was approved at the Atlantic Cape Board of Trustees’ Sept. 26 meeting, retroactive to Aug. 14.

Maria Kellett is assigned to oversee the Cape May County Campus as dean, Cape May County Campus, and associate dean, Resource Development. Kellett will continue to serve as the associate director of the Foundation and be located at the Cape May County Campus.

Donna Vassallo oversees the Atlantic City Campus as dean of the Worthington Atlantic City Campus, and dean, Career Education and Workforce Development. She is located at the Atlantic City Campus. Continue reading

Last Chance to Register for Oct. 13 Golf Tournament; Hole-in-One Prizes include $25,000

GolfTime is running out to participate in the 2017 Atlantic Cape Community College Scramble “Fore” Scholarships golf tournament, Friday, Oct. 13, at the Cape May National Golf Club.

Registration and lunch begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a scramble format, with a shotgun-start at 11:30 a.m.

Player fees, which include a complimentary gift, lunch and awards dinner, are $150 per person or $500 per foursome. Golfers can participate in a variety of skills challenges, including closest-to-the-pin and longest drive contests. Individuals and businesses can also support the event through sponsorship opportunities ranging from $150 to $5,000. New this year, all hole sponsors will have a chance to win a “Golf Getaway” that includes an overnight stay and dinner at the Chalfonte Hotel and golf for two at Cape May National. Hole sponsorship is $150 and sponsors receive a customized sign on the course. Continue reading

Message from Dr. Gaba regarding Puerto Rico and Mexico Natural Disasters

To Our College Community:

Just two weeks ago, I sent an email to the college community regarding the devastation in Texas and Florida because of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Recovery is ongoing and many continue to be without electricity and basic needs.
Today, our thoughts and prayers also go out to the people of Puerto Rico and Mexico because of the devastation due to the recent natural disasters.

The New York Times reported that “five days after Hurricane Maria tore through Puerto Rico, bisecting the entire island, the U.S. territory is in the grips of a serious, life-threatening crisis, with humanitarian aid getting in far more slowly than is needed. The island is running short on food, fuel, and access to clean water and there’s limited communications, which means some communities have received no information about the rescue efforts underway. Among the greatest threats is the continuing lack of power throughout much of the island, after nearly the entire power grid was knocked offline during the storm (about 80 percent of the transmission infrastructure was destroyed)”.

Volunteers Still Needed for Oct. 15 College-Wide Open House

The Admissions Office is still seeking faculty and staff to volunteer for our Fall 2017 College-Wide Open House:

Mays Landing Campus – STEM Building — Sunday, Oct. 15, 1-3 p.m.

Students will have the opportunity to speak with college faculty to learn about degree and career training programs, meet with staff to discuss the enrollment process and find out about college services and activities, as well as take a student- or staff-led tour of campus.

The Admissions Office greatly appreciates your participation in our college-wide open houses. We are grateful for the continued support of faculty and staff in our recruitment efforts and hope you will consider getting involved for this wonderful event!

Atlantic Cape Offers New Entrepreneur Training Workshops at Cape May County Campus

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a series of entrepreneur training workshops at its Cape May County Campus this fall for those interested in successfully marketing their own business.

Entrepreneur Marketing Basics teaches participants how to successfully market their products or services and will cover essential marketing plan components and the latest digital marketing and networking strategies, 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10. Cost is $39.

During Crowdfunding: The New Way to Raise Money!, attendants learn all about the new way to raise money for their causes, campaigns, projects or business, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16. Cost is $39. Continue reading

Atlantic Cape Trustee Maria Ivette Torres Joins New Jersey Council of County Colleges Executive Committee

Maria Ivette Torres

Maria Ivette Torres, a trustee at Atlantic Cape Community College since 2003, recently joined the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC) Executive Committee as one of the Trustees-at-Large members.

In addition to her new membership on NJCCC’s Executive Committee, Torres is vice chairperson of the New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, the state authority that oversees all state-sponsored higher education financial aid. Her community involvement includes service as first vice president of the Hispanic Alliance of Atlantic County and chairperson of its Education Committee. Torres retired as a guidance counselor from Oakcrest High School. Continue reading
