Atlantic Cape to Offer EMT Course

ambulanceAtlantic Cape Community College will partner with Mutual Aid Emergency Services to offer the New Jersey Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician course. This 230-hour course will meet 6-10 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Feb. 7, at the Worthington Atlantic City Campus. The fee is $1,895 which covers tuition and materials.

This course prepares students to obtain their EMT Certification through either the State of New Jersey and/or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT.) Once certified, candidates are qualified for various volunteer and career positions in New Jersey and other states that recognize NREMT or New Jersey certification. EMTs are widely used in hospitals, ambulances, patient transport units, racetracks, sports stadiums, concerts and bike teams.

This course covers adult and pediatric medical and trauma assessment, basic airway support and use of AED. It also includes assisting patients with and administering medication; splinting; bleeding control; and lifting, transferring and transporting stretchers and patients. Course material is presented through lectures, textbook readings, discussions, demonstrations, case presentations and summary skill sheets. In addition, EMT candidates must complete clinical experience in a hospital emergency department setting and other settings considered appropriate.

Course prerequisites include holding a high school diploma or GED, CPR certification for Health Care Professionals and obtaining a reading score of nine on the Test of Adult Basic Education. Candidates also must be 18 by the last day of the program and must have the physical strength to perform all required tasks of an EMT-Basic, among other requirements.
