The Atlantic Cape Community College Board of Trustees appointed officers at its annual reorganization meeting Nov. 22. Dave Coskey of Avalon was elected chairperson, Maria Mento of Ventnor was named vice chairperson and James Kennedy of Linwood was appointed treasurer. Coskey is president of Longport Media. Mento is retired executive vice president and chief finance officer for the Atlantic County Utilities Authority. Kennedy is former executive director of the Stockton University Foundation and served in leadership capacities for the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority. Jean McAlister of Galloway, dean of Resource Development & President/Board of Trustees Operations, was reappointed board secretary. Their terms run until November 2017.
Board members also approved their regular meeting schedule for 2016-17 and set official banking depositories.
In Personnel Action the Board:
–Appointed Matthew Bennett of Egg Harbor Township, maintenance mechanic II, Facilities, effective Nov. 23.
–Appointed Cara Bethmann of Manahawkin, specialist, Conference and Meeting Services, Atlantic City Campus, effective Nov. 28.
–Appointed Pierre Borno of Egg Harbor Township, housekeeper I, Facilities, effective Nov. 23.

Board Approves Retirements of Nine Long-time Employees, Including:
—Merrill-Jean Bailey of Atco, effective June 30. Bailey joined the college in 1991 and will retire as an assistant professor of English. During her 25 years at the college, she also served on the Minority Affairs, International Education and Curriculum committees, as English Department chair and Perkins Faculty Facilitator. A former colleague stated, “Merrill-Jean is an exciting and innovative member of the department, and we are fortunate to have her.”
—Thomas Boghosian, of Mays Landing, effective June 30. Boghosian joined the college in 1969 and served as professor of English and Developmental Studies, as well as English Department chair and Developmental Studies coordinator, and participated in Middle States self-study work groups, the Curriculum Committee and General Education Committee. A former supervisor stated, “Tom Boghosian’s contributions have been consistently, year after year, outstanding. It has been my experience that when there is a little extra piece of work that needs doing, that nobody will notice has to be done, Tom is generally the one who does it.”
—Marcia Kleinz of Erial, effective Dec. 31. The associate professor of mathematics joined Atlantic Cape in 2002 and has served on the General Education and Academic Standards committees and volunteered as cheerleading coach. A former department chair stated, “Professor Kleinz is enthusiastic, dedicated and dependable. She is an asset to the Mathematics and Science Department. She is a dedicated team player.”
—Dr. Eugene LoPresti of Linwood, effective Dec. 31. The English professor joined Atlantic Cape in 1974 and has served as English coordinator and Basic Skills coordinator and participated on the Academic Standards, Curriculum, Scholarship and Instructional Resources committees. He also served as a Middle States Self-Study chair. A former supervisor stated, “He is successful at demystifying the reading and learning processes while offering substantive aid in skills development to help students cope with the demands of college-level work.”
—Dr. James MacNair of Browns Mills, effective June 30. The sociology professor joined Atlantic Cape in 1988 and was the founder and adviser of the Human Services Club, coordinator of the Head Start Training Program, Cooperative Education faculty coordinator and Social Science Department chair during his tenure. He also served on a Middle States self-study team, Scholarship Committee, Academic Standards Committee and Collegiate Assembly and assisted with New Student Orientation. A former department chair stated, “He brings a breadth to the sociology offerings and fresh insights to the introductory courses.”
—Tyrone McKiver of Mays Landing, effective Nov. 1. McKiver joined the college in 1984 as a custodian and was promoted to a Grounds/Labor/Maintenance worker. He has been recognized for his efforts with the New Jersey Council of County Colleges Best Practices Conferences, STEM Building groundbreaking ceremony and Hurricane Irene campus cleanup and received numerous perfect attendance awards. A former supervisor commended McKiver for his performance after a fire in a campus building, stating, “Your service was above and beyond the normal call of duty and exhibited a true dedication to the college.”
—Dr. Alice Rainey of Hammonton, effective Dec. 31. Rainey joined Atlantic Cape in 1978 and served in many roles over 38 years, including clerk stenographer, office coordinator, special events assistant, administrative secretary, student development specialist and program officer. She received perfect attendance awards and served as a guest lecturer, noncredit instructor, senior adjunct instructor and co-op faculty coordinator. A former supervisor stated, “She is the adviser of choice and has many students who seek her advice on a regular basis. She listens to student concerns and will frequently act as a student advocate.”
—Clennon Roe of Mays Landing, effective June 30. Roe, a housekeeping working foreman, joined the college in 2006. He received numerous perfect attendance awards. A former supervisor stated, “Mr. Roe is very responsible and dependable and is good operating the machines. He is always willing to help others as needed.”
—Hal Lugerner of Egg Harbor City, effective March 31. Lugerner joined the college in 2006 as a counselor and also served as an adjunct instructor. His supervisor stated, “He has acute listening skills and a calm spirit that encourages students to open up to him. He has the ability to help students find the good in themselves, no matter how low their level of self-esteem.”

–Replacement of the wastewater collection system for H & K buildings, Bernal Mechanical Contractors of Vineland, $29,480.
–Unmanned aerial vehicles, Draganfly Innovations Inc., Saskatoon, Canada, $101,784.
–Support agreement for IBM Remote Account Advocate, Windows/Linux Operating System, Ocean Computer Group, Matawan, $29,631.
–Digital marketing services with Townsquare Media of New York, New York.
–Contract extension with U.S. Security Associates, Inc., through June 30, 2017, a total cost not to exceed $625,000, cumulative, from December 2015.
Atlantic Cape Trustees Approve 2 Percent Raise for President
Praising the president’s service to the college, Atlantic Cape’s Board of Trustees voted to increase Mora’s salary from $190,562 to $194,373, retroactive to July 1.
The increase follows the president’s annual compensation review and performance evaluation in which his performance was found to be “excellent.” The board also approved an unmatched pension contribution of $9,719 to Mora for the period of July 1-Dec. 31, 2016.
In Grants Action, the Board:
–Approved entering into a service agreement with Wildwood School District in which Atlantic Cape will provide services to the College and Career Readiness Program for Wildwood High School in support of Wildwood School District’s grant from the State of New Jersey Department of Education “College and Career Readiness: A Partnership Between New Jersey High Schools and Community Colleges” grant program.
–Accepted the 2016-17 Mentor-Connect Technical Assistance and Mentoring Support Program to obtain free grant proposal mentoring and faculty travel reimbursements totaling $4,800 over the term Nov. 1, 2016-Oct. 1, 2017, to help Atlantic Cape prepare a highly competitive application to the NSF ATE Small Grants program.
–Approved being a proposed subgrantee on Rutgers University’s application to the New Jersey Department of Transportation Bureau of Research, Drone/Unmanned Aircraft System Regulations and Policies for Use in New Jersey, with a cost-reimbursement-based subgrant portion of $119,339 over two years, Jan. 1, 2017-Dec. 31, 2018.
–Approved accepting a grant of $2,540 from USA Archery to purchase 10 archery mats.
In Other Business, the Board:
–Approved the Oct. 31, 2016, financial statement.
–Approved the draft financial statement for the year ended June 30, 2016, as of Nov. 13.
–Recognized an amendment to the agreement with Delta Dental of New Jersey.
–Adopted revisions to Policy No. 503, Grants Procurement/Administration, updating the policy to reflect modern best practices in grant seeking and grants management.
–Approved eliminating Policy 807, Qualifications of Faculty, a duplicate of Policy 101.
–Adopted Policy No. 26, President Emeritus, establishing the board may grant president emeritus status to an Atlantic Cape Community College president who is retired and provided outstanding and distinguished service to the college and exemplifies the highest standard of personal and professional integrity, civic responsibility and vision and leadership.
–The board approved a resolution commemorating the college on celebrating 50 years of creating opportunity for the residents of Atlantic and Cape May counties.
–Approved dropping the History Option, Liberal Arts Associate in Arts degree effective fall 2017.
–Approved dropping the following professional series programs due to limited enrollment or overlapping coursework with other professional series options, effective fall 2017: Civics Professional Series, Educational Office Specialist Professional Series, Legal Office Specialist Professional Series, Medical Office Specialist Professional Series, and Android Programmer Professional Series.
–Approved changing the iPhone Programmer Professional Series to Smartphone Programmer Professional Series due to combining the iPhone Programmer and Android Programmer series, effective fall 2017.
In the President’s Report:
–Mora introduced Maria Kellett, senior director of Resource Development and Community and Alumni Outreach, who announced the college will join #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide on Nov. 29. The college’s goal is to raise $50,000 for scholarships. #GivingOpporTuesday, a play on the college’s tag line, “opportunity starts here,” will be used on social media leading up to and on Nov. 29 to encourage engagement from donors and participants in the college community.
