Atlantic Cape Community College’s Board of Trustees met Oct. 25 at the Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City Campus to approve personnel matters, contracts and purchases.
Purchases, Contracts Approved:
–The following non-bid awards for culinary food items in excess of $17,500 each to: Ashley Foods of Philadelphia; B.F. Mazzeo Fruit & Produce of Northfield; Balford Farms of Burlington; Samuels and Son Seafood of Philadelphia; and US Food Service of Bridgeport.
In Personnel Action, the Board Approved:
–The promotion of Carmen Cabrera, of Hammonton, from Admissions specialist to senior manager, Admissions, effective Oct. 26.
–The resignation of Michele Previti, assistant director, health care grants programs, Workforce Development, retroactive to Oct. 23.
–The retirement of Kathleen Fritz, of Egg Harbor Township, effective June 30. Fritz joined the college in 1992 as a library clerk and was later promoted to library technician. She received numerous Perfect Attendance Awards and volunteered for college events. A former supervisor stated, “Ms. Fritz displays a strong work ethic and the quality of her work is exceptional.”
–The retirement of Kanchan Pandit, of Galloway, effective Nov. 1. Pandit joined the college in 2003 and has served in many roles at the Worthington Atlantic City Campus, including tutor, noncredit instructor, and Conference and Meeting Services specialist. A former supervisor stated, “(Pandit) creates a welcoming and open dialogue with customers, staff and supervisors.”
In Grants Action, The Board Approved:
–Submission of an application to the Easton Foundations USA Archery Collegiate Archery Program requesting $3,000 to buy archery team equipment for beginner- and intermediate-level archers over the anticipated term of Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2017.
–Accepting funding for the Atlantic City and Pleasantville GEAR UP and College Bound programs at Atlantic Cape, with the current fiscal year funding level of $334,200, and previous cumulative state and federal distributions made for the programs totaling $1,606,800.
In Other Business, the Board:
–Approved the draft financial statement for the year ended June 30, 2016, as of Oct. 16.
–Approved the FY’17 financial statement for Sept. 30, 2016.
–Approved discontinuing the Visual Communication Professional Series and the Hospitality Marketing Professional Series effective fall 2017, due to a steady decline in enrollment.
–Approved a settlement with a former employee.
–Reaffirmed the following policies, in keeping with a periodic review of the Policies and Procedures Manual: Policy #602 Appropriated Resources and Policy #301 Gift Solicitation.
In the President’s Report:
—Robert Kusmiez, assistant director of GEAR UP, a college readiness program, provided an overview of the program, which targets low income, first generation students at seven Atlantic City and Pleasantville schools. The college is in the final year of a six-year grant program that provided tutoring, mentoring, financial aid and college prep workshops and college visits for the students and their parents. Kusmiez reported students can participate in the program in grades 6-12, and the majority of those who complete it attend college.
—Esther Gandica, senior manager of workforce training, reported on a successful customer service training for Cape May County that earned the college an award recently from the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce. At the award dinner, Dr. Mitchell Levy, vice president for Student Affairs and dean of the Cape May County Campus, was installed as a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
—Dr. Peter L. Mora, president, announced Bakari Lee, a former college commencement speaker and Board of Trustees chair at Hudson County Community College, was named chair of the National Council for the Association of Community College Trustees.
—Dr. Otto Hernandez, vice president of Academic Affairs, introduced Ravi Manimaran, the new dean of STEM. Manimaran joined Atlantic Cape Oct. 3. “His background in engineering will allow us to expand the depth of our program,” Hernandez said.
–Caesar Niglio, president of the Atlantic Cape Community College Education Association, thanked board member Brian Lefke and Dean Jean McAlister for meeting with the education association to clarify details of the ongoing presidentail search.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Mays Landing Campus in J202. All are welcome to attend.
