Accomplishments–July 28, 2016

At the University of New England’s graduation ceremonies on May 21, Barbara Heard, assistant professor of biology, earned the degree of doctor of education in educational leadership. Her research evaluated the effectiveness of specific accommodations provided for students with blindness and visual impairments in the college biology laboratory. An article summarizing the study results was published in Future Reflections, a National Federation of the Blind publication for parents and teachers of students with blindness and visual impairments. The article is available at Science is For Everyone. She also presented the results of her study in a workshop at the annual conference of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society in Atlanta on May 25.


Dr. Josette Katz, professor of hospitality management, attended the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education Conference in Dallas, this month. She was responsible for co-chairing and moderating ICHRIE’s Leadership Institute and gave a presentation on “Exploring Exit Exams in Assessing Hospitality Management Programs.” Dr. Katz, a former president of this international group, is recognized as one of its “Master Teachers.” She also attended the Accreditation Commission of Programs of Hospitality Administration meeting where she serves as a Commissioner.
