Here’s the Scoop-April 29, 2016

Cake and coffee were served in Careme’s, Friday, April 22, to honor the retirement of Academy of Culinary Arts Chef Educator Michael Huber. Huber taught at the ACA for 20 years.

On Saturday,  March 19, the 41st Jersey Shore Science Fair was held at Stockton University. Students in 6th through 12th grades from Cape May, Atlantic, Ocean and Monmouth counties competed in 14 different categories. First and second place winners from grades 6th  through 8th and first, second, and third place winners in grades 9th through 12th went on to the next level of competition, the Delaware Valley Science Fair. The following Atlantic Cape faculty/employees served as judges: Melba Christy, Melanie Schroer, Agnes Galiano, James Eberwine,  Laurie Lemons,  Tim Cwik,  Bo Zilovic, June Xu, Mike Bolicki, Eileen Curristine, and Chief Judge Rosanne Weiss.

Everyone enjoyed talking to the students and seeing all the fascinating projects.

Poet Joel Dias-Porter visited Elinor Mattern’s 099 ALP English class, and gave a poetry reading to about two dozen people at the Worthington Atlantic City Campus.


On Thursday, April 13, Andre van de Putte, dean of enrollment for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, visited Atlantic Cape to conduct a site visit for the Fine Arts Program Review. While here, Dean van de Putte conducted a transfer seminar for students.

Adjunct instructor Ginny Lyon’s Principles of Marketing class hosted “Career Conversations,” a panel presentation with experts from the field, Monday, April 25.


Local professionals shared their views on career opportunities, the value of an education and the college courses they would suggest to assist students in their career options.

Atlantic Cape RN Program seniors attended a Career and University Information Fair, April 25, at the Nursing Department. The fair is each spring semester by faculty teaching N208- Nursing Trends as part of the student’s capstone project.

Educational institutions present included Drexel, Stockton, Rutgers, Grand Canyon and Rider universities, as well as Chamberland School of Nursing.

Bayada Homecare, Star Pediatrics Homecare, Shore Medical Center and Preferred Homecare provided career information and opportunities.

Students dressed professionally, presented resumes and gathered information for continuing education opportunities.


Professor Michele Leacott, Associate Dean Janet Marler, Dean Andre Richburg and Vice President of Student Affairs Mitchell Levy presented at 2016 NJCCC Best Practices Conference held at Middlesex County College on April 22. The title of their presentation was “Promoting Guided Pathways via Developmental Math.”

Dr. Nina Stoltzenberg, Atlantic Cape’s Beacons by the Sea Scholar, organized and delivered two programs intended to raise greater community and professional awareness about individuals with autism disorders and the challenges and rewards experienced by their caregivers. On April 7, Dr. Stoltzenberg arranged to have a screening of Charles Jones’ “Autistic Like Me,” a documentary chronicling the emotional struggle of a group of fathers with autistic children as they shared their fears, disappointments and, ultimately, their acceptance and celebration of a very different parenting experience than they had envisioned. Following the documentary, Dr. Stoltzenberg moderated a panel discussion featuring Mr. Jones, Jeff Cohen and Chris Yoder, all fathers of autistic sons. The group was also joined by Patrick Connelly, a licensed social worker.

Later in the month, Dr. Stoltzenberg delivered a workshop for faculty in which she discussed strategies teachers can employ to help students with autism to succeed in the academic setting.
