College to Offer Environmental Science Degree; Trustees Approve Personnel Resolutions, Purchases

Atlantic Cape Community College trustees heard a report on the new Environmental Science degree to begin this fall and approved personnel and purchasing resolutions when they met in regular session May 27 at the college’s Cape May County Campus.

Students in the new associate in science degree program will develop work ethics that are effective and safe in a laboratory environment and experiment with laboratory and field equipment to obtain data. This degree can lead to a baccalaureate degree in environmental science or environmental studies at accredited colleges or universities.

Atlantic Cape is working with connections at local high schools to develop concurrent and dual enrollment programs. “We also looked at local four-year schools and developed a curriculum that is appropriate for transfer,” said Jim Sacchinelli, assistant professor of science.

In Personnel Action:

The board made the following appointments:

Danielle Epps of Galloway, assistant director, admissions, effective May 28.

Mark Lewis of Egg Harbor City, housekeeper I, facilities management, effective May 28

Felicia Smith of Egg Harbor City, housekeeper I, facilities management, effective May 28.

Bridget Temme-Soifer of Mays Landing, senior research technician, effective May 28.

Dr. Curtis Andrews of Sicklerville, assistant professor of social science, effective Sept. 2.

Dean Wyks of Woodbine, assistant professor of criminal justice, effective Sept. 2.

Richard Russell of Ocean City, assistant professor of English, effective Sept. 2.

August Daquila of Ocean City, dean of administration and business services, effective July 1.

“After a very comprehensive search, we are replacing the last of our retiring cabinet members,” Dr. Peter L. Mora, president, said. “Mr. Daquila brings extensive higher education experience and knows the business services, funding and financial aspects of the job.”

Daquila has an MBA from Rutgers University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Joseph’s University. He most recently served as manager of fiscal reporting and analysis at Rowan University and held previous posts at Ramapo College, St. Peter’s Prep and Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The board accepted the resignations of:

Scott Conklin, security officer I, retroactive to May 23.

Joe D’Agostino, senior manager, Web systems and marketing, retroactive to May 16.

Danielle Devlin, office assistant, president’s office, retroactive to May 12.

In Other Action, The Board:

–Granted an honorary associate in arts degree to Rochelle Hendricks, secretary of higher education for the State of New Jersey, in recognition of her admirable service as Atlantic Cape’s 47th annual commencement speaker.

–Approved the April 30, 2014, financial statements and acknowledged the FY’15 Annual Budget Message.

–Approved a recommendation of Dr. Mora to appropriate $224,978 from the FY’13 year-end unrestricted fund balance to a designated account in the Plant Fund for the institution’s share of the debt service of the 2014 Funding Cycle of the NJEFA Higher Education Equipment Leasing Fund.

–Authorized a two-year contract with Delta Dental for the employee dental plan.

–Authorized a contract with Iden Advancement through June 30, 2014, not to exceed $21,060.

In Grant Action, The Board:

–Approved serving as a partner on three separate applications to the State of New Jersey Department of Education for a $7.1 million Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge Grant Training Academy, which would allocate up to $2 million to Atlantic Cape from July 18, 2014-Dec. 31, 2017. The grant will provide funding for the development of a statewide Training Academy for the provision of core supplemental training for early childhood learning and development providers. Only one consortium led by a four-year institution with two community college partners will receive funding.

–Agreed to accept up to $88,466 from the Atlantic City Boys & Girls Club for training services related to Youth Build programs from Sept. 1, 2014-Aug. 31, 2015.

–Approved submitting an application to the State of New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development for $599,050, over the anticipated term of July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015, to provide adult basic skills, integrated English literacy and civics education.

–Approved a recommendation of the official named facilities in the STEM building.

Contracts and Purchases:

–Media buying services, Success Communications, Parsippany, not to exceed $93,000.

–Continuing Education guide printing, Bartash Printing, Philadelphia, $20,050.

–3D printers, Allegheny Educational Systems, Inc., Natrona Heights, Pa., $29,900.

–Voice services, Broadview Networks, Rye Brook, NY, $2,300. Adjustment to existing bid.

–Computer equipment, state contract, ELF funds, $1.03 million. Purchase includes 657 Dell personal computers, 262 Dell laptops, 163 Macintosh mini computers and 57 Macintosh laptops to replace computers at all three campuses.

–Servers, state contract, HEIT Grant, Ocean Computer, Matawan, $343,041.

–Boiler replacement, Worthington Atlantic City Campus, Kisby-Lees Mechanical, Atlantic City, $322,880.

In the President’s Report:

Sean Fischer, dean of resource development/president & Board of Trustees operations, and Dr. Mitchell Levy, vice president of student affairs, provided an overview of the 47th annual commencement, held May 22. A total of 850 students earned associate in science, associate in arts and associate in applied science degrees. “There was a phenomenal amount of work, and we had in excess of 2,000 people on campus, inside and outside, during the event,” Dr. Levy said, thanking the efforts of the staff to coordinate this activity.

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, at the Mays Landing Campus. All are invited to attend.
