Academy of Culinary Arts Awards Medals to New Chefs at May 19 Ceremony

The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College awarded culinary medals and certificates to nearly 40 new chefs and baking and pastry professionals prepared with the latest culinary knowledge on Monday, May 19.

Thirty-one graduates honed their skills in the Academy’s Culinary Arts program, and six completed the Baking and Pastry program. Three short-term specialization certificates in Baking and Pastry and Food Service Management were awarded.

The awards ceremony was held in the college’s Walter Edge Theater on the Mays Landing Campus, and honored the graduates with gold, silver or bronze medals or certificates based on their grade point averages and criteria established by the American Culinary Federation. Specialization graduates received certificates of completion. A reception at Careme’s, the on-campus, student-run gourmet restaurant, followed the ceremony.

Chef Patricia “Kelly” McClay, dean of the Academy of Culinary Arts, awarded Dr. Art Wexler, vice president of academic affairs, with an Honorary Culinary Certificate for his work with the department and upcoming retirement.

Daniel Crumb of Elmer was named valedictorian and winner of the Nathan Schwartz Award, which is presented to the top student of each graduating class.

The keynote speaker was Anthony T. Catanoso, principal owner and managing partner of Steel Pier Associates, LLC, Atlantic City.

Catanoso advised graduates, “Just as your sharpest knives can get dull, so can your talent— never stop learning. Strive to be the best and the brightest, stay hungry, no pun intended.”

ACA alumna Rachel Zarycki presented Culinary Student Association awards to Adam Field, Joseph Sterchele and Briana Manning for their dedication to the student club.
